Under conditions defined by EU law, the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) laboratory test is used to measure fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from passenger cars, as well as their pollutant emissions. What is WLTP and how does it work?

The new “Worldwide harmonized Light-duty vehicles Test Procedure” (WLTP) will apply to the type approval of new passenger cars across the EU since September 1, 2017. It will succeed the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), which has been in force since 1992.

Confusingly, in  The European Union hopes that this goal will be achieved with the help of WLTP. Just like fuel consumption, the CO2 emissions of a vehicle depend on the  28 sept. 2018 Entrée en vigueur depuis le 1er septembre, la nouvelle norme WLTP remplace sous peine de ne plus pouvoir les commercialiser en Europe.

The ratio between NEDC and WLTP CO 2 values is a cornerstone of EU vehicle efficiency policies because it affects new-vehicle CO 2 targets from 2021 onward. Due to a one-year phase-in period and special derogations for the sale of end-of-series vehicles, the transition from NEDC to WLTP stretches over a period of four calendar years. The new

WLTP type approval testing will be introduced for new car types. Some cars will have ‘old’ NEDC values, while others will already be certified under the new WLTP conditions. The industry would like to start using WLTP-based results for general consumer information (eg sales brochures and websites).

Unlike NEDC and WLTP, the Real Driving Emissions tests will measure pollutants such as NO x while vehicles are driven on the road, thereby serving to confirm if the results of the lab tests are also reflected under normal usage conditions. 2019-03-26 The EU’s RDE and WLTP. The intent of the European Union’s new real driving emissions (RDE) testing regulations is to validate under real driving conditions emissions levels as measured in the laboratory. RDE testing involves the use of portable emissions measuring systems (PEMS) that is attached to the vehicle under test. (WLTP) set out in Commission Regulation (EU) […/…]2, will replace the New European Test Cycle (NEDC), which is currently used pursuant to Commission Regulation (EC) No 692/20083 but no longer corresponds to present-day's driving conditions or vehicle technologies. The WLTP will provide stricter test conditions and From September 2017 the EU procedure for testing emissions from vehicles changed from the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). WLTP is more accurate reflecting current driving trends and technological developments.

From September 2017, WLTP will gradually replace the obsolete NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) and will bring more transparency in the EU. From September 2018. WLTP applies to new types of cars since 1 September 2017 and to all car registrations as of September 2018. However, before the switch to WLTP can be completed, a number of issues still need to be resolved by the EU. database compared to the EU WLTP database.
